Belgium
Case 1. On October 7, 2023, Palestinian Hamas terrorists initiated a large surprise attack called 'Operation al-Aqsa Storm' following years of violent conflict between Israel and Palestine. Thousands of rockets were launched from the Gaza Strip towards Israel, while armed Hamas militants targeted several civilian locations in southern Israel. Israel responded with airstrikes in the Gaza Strip and declared a state of war on October 9, 2023. Additionally, Israel imposed a "total blockade" on the Gaza Strip, as announced by Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, stating, "There will be no electricity, no food, no fuel, everything is closed. We are fighting human animals and we are acting accordingly."
Example of humorous reactions in translation:
Humorous comments in online media spheres predominantly target absurdity of violence and Israel's role in conflict vis-a-vis its military occupation of the West Bank and Gaza, e.g.
- "Belgium kindly asks all Hamas fighters to leave the Gaza strip." "This is our demise." (Hamas fighters conversation when reading the latest news)
- Friends actor Matthew Perry died at age 54 (title): "Sorry I yelled that 54 is too soon, I forgot what you had to go through in Israel and Gaza the past weeks."
Case 2. In September 2023 Chairman of the Flemish social-democratic party Vooruit Conner Rousseau sparked controversy due to racist and sexist remarks (while intoxicated) directed at the Roma community during a discussion with police inspectors after a night out in Rousseau's hometown, Sint-Niklaas. The local police department of Sint-Niklaas responded by filing a report citing racism and xenophobia. Rousseau himself pursued legal action by filing a petition in court to impose a publication ban on this incident. Following the widespread media attention of the event (specifically Rousseau’s attempt to take care of matters behind closed doors), Rousseau publicly apologized on October, 5th, yet minimized his remarks to drunken banter (i.e. "zattemansklap" in Dutch). On November 17, Rousseau resigned from his position as chairman and his membership of the party.
Example of humorous reactions in translation:
- After the police report, now also doctor's report shows up (title of the cartoon).
- "So doctor, is it what I think it is? R ...?" "Those accute brown thoughts? No worries, that's just some Connorhea, it'll be over in a few hours!"
- "Friends and family are concerned about Conner Rousseau …. Conner Rousseau has not caused any controversy for four days."
Estonia
Case 1. A transport company partly owned by the husband of Estonia's Prime Minister Kaja Kallas has continued doing business in Russia after the start of its full-scale invasion in Ukraine.
Example of humorous reactions in translation:
- (Kaja Kallas addresses her husband, Arvo Hallik): My dearest Arvo, I will make you a government advisor, then it will be easier for me to think of lies.
- Since now absolutely all the "experts" have given PR advice to Kaja Kallas and it's obviously wrong, it's time for us to say what actually helps [her to restore her reputation in Estonia]. In other words, unfortunately, Kallas now has no choice but to reveal her mushroom picking spot to the people.
Case 2. Monument marking the life of the first president of the Republic of Estonia Konstantin Päts (1874-1956) was unveiled in central Tallinn. Päts term in office (1938-1940) lasted until Soviet occupation in the summer of 1940. He and his family were then deported to the USSR, where he died. The monument had a peculiar shape, since it featured only the huge stone head of Päts.
Examples of humorous reactions in translation:
- From today, there is an unspeakable weather forecast in Tallinn.
- The head of the loaf is bright - sunny weather.
- The head of the loaf is spotted - occasional precipitation.
- The head of the loaf is dark - heavy rain.
- Päts has a white hat on his head - snowfall.
- The loafer has a white beard - a snowstorm.
- The head of the loaf has flown away - a hurricane.
- Estonian Dog Association: in our opinion, Päts's proposed monument is comfortably low;
- 25% of Estonians intend to tell tourists that the Pätsi monument is a meteorite
Poland
Case 1. The leader of the ruling party Jarosław Kaczyński made an offensive comment regarding non-binary people. A journalist from the satirical talk show attempted to mock the politician by paraphrasing his words, saying: "What gender are you today?". The humorous attempt failed, resulting in offending another journalist whose daughter is transgender.
This is related to another scandal which happened in 2022 when Kaczyński made a joke mocking the status of transgender people, by saying "I was a man until half past five, but now I am a woman."
Examples of humorous reactions in translation:
- Krzysztof Daukszewicz, who was removed from running "Szkło kontaktowe", confessed that he was working on two books: "One with his wife, the other with his son." As the description shows, gender is not a problem for him.
- And did it finally become clear what gender he was that day?
Case 2. On the 5th of November 2022 during the meeting with the electors in Elk the head of the ruling party PIS Jarosław Kaczyński wanted to warn women about the dangers of excessive alcohol consumption and its harmful effect on the ability to have children, saying that if young women get inebriated before 25, they will have no children. He himself considered his words to be witty, but his comments that it only takes 2 years for women to become alcoholics (compared to 20 for men), and the usage of a colloquial idiom (“hit the bottle”) referring to alcohol consumption caused public outrage. As a result, Kaczyński got reprimand (the highest form of punishment) from the Ethics Committee.
Examples of humorous reactions in translation:
- An average Polish woman aged 25 listening to the party leader's bullshit.(caption to an image of a woman drinking from a huge glass and spilling the red wine all over herself)
- Women hit the bottle. Men want to be women. PIS's argumentation shows the connection between fertility and LGBT. (cartoon)
- I don't want to have children, I prefer to drink alcohol, I'm twenty years old, I have the whole world ahead of me. I want to hit the bottle, preferably every day. Without kids, I'll drink Aperol Spritz. I won't take 500 plus [Law and Justice's social program supporting the families - 500 PLN for a child], I'll choose a fashionable club, I'll choose a bar where several couples dance. I will live childless and drink constantly, flooding my days with expensive martinis.(words of a song with a catchy tune)
Belarus
Case 1. While making her 2023 New Year address to the Belarusian people, the Belarusian democratic leader in exile Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya was holding a cup in her hands. A few days later the cup has suddenly become one of the focal points of Belarusians’ online humorous discussions. The discussions were triggered by a tweet hinting that the price of the cup - around 20 euro, according to the tweet’s author - was too expensive for Tsikhanouskaya to pay for a cup.
Examples of humorous reactions in translation:
- For one thing, we can be calm, under the new government the people will not leave the officials alone, they will have to make a [financial] report for every cup and plate;
- In the future Belarus there will be Belarusian football championship, Belarusian Cup and Tsikhanouskaya Cup.
Case 2. Belarusian illegitimate president Aleksandr Lukashenko looked very ill during the Victory Day parade in Moscow on May 9, 2023. Internet users started making (humorous) suggestions about his possible death. Lukashenko's press service hasn't posted any photos or videos of him during the next several days - this exacerbated the rumours. Humour culminated when on May 15 the press service released photos and videos of Lukashenko that were so obviously photoshopped that they looked ridiculous.
Examples of humorous reactions in translation:
- We haven't seen Lukashenko already for 3 days. But we'd better not have seen him for 30 years;
- After Lukashenko leaves, the celebration of Victory Day on May 9 should be preserved. But in case he dies today.
